Things started to move again for cpik C compiler!!! cpik is an open source C compiler for PIC18F microcontrollers. How it differ from SDCC? It is a "native" PIC18F C compiler - this means that it was specially written for Microchip 18F microcontrollers and, not an adaptation as is SDCC which was written primarily (and continue to be developed mainly) for another type of microcontroller. I may say that cpik is the only open-source native C compiler for PIC18F microcontrollers.

The next version (1.6.x) of Pic Micro Pascal (PMP) will provide JAL USB Bootloader compatibility and many other goodies - I won't tell you more so, watch that place.
This means that I will not be "forced" to override anymore that USB Bootloader of FreeJALduino board every time I need to program something in PMP, along with the JAL and SDCC compilers. Just let the board connected to USB port and anything goes smoothly. It also means that I will translate almost all JAL tutorials in PMP language - watch this place. Well, if God give us health...

This will be Arduino UNO and will be available from the Arduino Shop on 28 october. The FTDI chip was removed and instead an ATmega8U2 is used, providing an USB CDC stack. Also, Arduino have his own logo, USB Vendor ID and trademark - bye bye Arduino "original" clones!

A new release of FreeBasic compiler

A new version of FreeBasic compiler, 0.21.1 is available for download from freebasic.net site. It come with many language improvements and fixes and, what is most important for me, the multiplatform support is extended. The developer started adding support for OpenBSD, Darwin (this mean Mac OS), NetBSD - not yet archives for these Operating Systems. Currently, only DOS, Windows and Linux are supported.

I can say is worth a look. Is nice to have a free and fast multiplatform system development for small and medium applications - electronics is my zone of interest, where the compiler can be used to create logging applications, robotic control software, etc. .

FreeBASIC is a completely free, open-source, 32-bit BASIC compiler, with syntax similar to MS-QuickBASIC, that adds new features such as pointers, unsigned data types, inline assembly, object orientation, and many others.

I uploaded on Google Code the last version (0.2) of FreeJALduino documentation. It is in HTML and is easy to browse. Is a little archived offline site which can help you to get started with this board.

The theme is "1024px" from Andreas Viklund and it use also a javascript source highlighter for JALv2 language so, it have the look and feel of the Swordfish Basic site

The name of the archive is "doc_v02.zip" and can be downloaded from this page. The jal_v02.tar.gz archive (from the same download page) contain the development environment for FreeJALduino board and is referred in the documentation as being "jal.zip" archive.

Climate of the Mackay area

The Mackay area has a tropical climate. Summers are generally hot and wet, though the coast has the benefit of a regular afternoon sea breeze. Winter days are generally warm and sunny, while winter nights can be cool away from the coast.

Mackay's average annual rainfall is 1585mm. A large proportion falls in the months December through to March with the driest months being August/September.

Maximum daytime temperatures are typically 29-30 degrees during the summer/wet months and 21-25 degrees during the winter/dry months. Minimum overnight temperatures are typically around 23 degrees during the summer/wet months and 13-14 degrees during the winter/dry months.

The region lies in the trade wind belt for most of the year resulting in south to southeast winds. During the warmer months afternoon northeast sea breezes are common. Fresh south-easterlies can blow along the coast for lengthy periods during summer and autumn, but gale force winds are rare and normally only occur with a tropical cyclone.

Pioneer River

The cyclone season is from December through to April with 43 tropical cyclones passing within 150km of Mackay during the years 1910-1992. Mackay has 17 thunder days per year on average with the majority of these occuring from late spring through to early autumn. Fog occurs on average 9 times each year. Maximum temperatures have reached the high 30's and minimum temperatures have dropped to less than 4 degrees.

The Pioneer River has a quite well recorded flood history with documented evidence of flooding as far back as 1884. Since that time many devastating floods have occurred, with the highest occurring in February 1958 which peaked at a height of 9.14 metres on the Mackay flood warning gauge at the Forgan Bridge.

PCB failure!

Well this had to be FreeJALduino v.04 board. Started to solder ICSP socket and 20MHz crystal, then at 18F2550 socket I saw that the paper with the toner was not sticked perfectly. 18F2550 socket and Arduino sockets are not scaled right. PCB failure :( !

And I destroyed a bunch of 0.7mm bits with this board... arrrgh!

Update:

It is clear that, until I will have my CNC Router, the strategy must be changed. I will continue to use toner transfer method (using the support paper of labels as press-and-peel paper) but for holes I need a hard, transparent plastic as template.

What I have in mind? The plastic cover from a CD box. Printing the traces on a normal paper, pointing the holes with a needle, sticking the paper on plastic cover and making holes. If everything was made ok, then the plastic cover will be used as template for making holes on a pcb, even if this pcb have not so good aligned traces. If holes are in right places (it's important for shields), this is all what matters.

It is a nice programmer editor written by Jeffrey Pohlmeyer using FOX Toolkit cross platform libraries. All things important to a JAL programmer can be configured from "Preferences dialog": syntax (keywords, operators, attributes, identifiers, colors), new commands in "Tools" menu and in toolbar. You really don't need to modify the source code. Anyway, I did it for JAL files so, you need only to set desired colors and commands (for compilation) - I will provide executables for SUSE LInux, Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.4 ppc for those don't want to add required JAL keywords in "Preferences dialog". For those which don't want to wait, from "Preferences dialog", in Syntax tab, select "vhdl" language to modify it for JAL language. A tutorial will follow when I will have enough time - but is really easy to do your modifications.

Why not Qt? It is a big library and depends on user to download it and to install it right. And is not working right on Mac PowerPC processors. And not time from my part for an application written from zero.

Ok, enough time spent for this, back to finish my boards and PC application for my USB CNC Router.

Original article: I wanted to compile QWriter and I downloaded Qt4.6.0 with Qt Creator but no luck. All examples and projects are trying to link for i386 processors (from inside Qt Creator). So I downgraded to 4.5.3 but still no luck - same problem. So, to get started, I downloaded the sources for 4.5.3 version and until now, the compiled projects works well (Qt still under compilation, as you can see in picture).

I will not install it yet, I will try also Qt4.6.0 sources and if it goes well, it will be my choice (I downloaded the sources of KBasic and I want to give it a try but require Qt4.6.0).

I'm ready to transfer the toner on copper layer for making FreeJALduino v.4-01 and FreeJALduino MEGA v.3b boards. These boards are using the last design and will have full software support. Qt Serial Communicaton Terminal under Win32, Linux, Mac OS X

I found here a good serial comm. terminal, cross platform. It don't have auto detection for existing serial ports but have a editable combo box field so you can set your serial port. I compiled in Qt Creator under Windows and Linux and is working great. Is a good solution and I recommend it. The modified sources and a ready to use Win32 executable (it needs QT 4.6.0) can be found here (download also all .dll files from there).

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Express Editions

I downloaded the DVD with Visual Studio 2008 Express Editions which contain Visual C#, Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual Web Developer. Why? From two reasons:

Because many time when you find an interesting open source project you need one of these tools (VC++ more than the others);
Because Embarcaderro don't offer anymore Turbo products for free: Turbo Delphi, Turbo C++. I was fast enough to register my Turbo Delphi but not fast enough for Turbo C++ :( .

So now I have them and the starting program looks like this:

Anyway, I like to program in Linux more than on any other operating system. But when you want your program to be available for others, you must think at multiplatform development. So, I made another DVD with all tools available for the three main platforms, Linux, Windows, Mac. : Lazarus, Qt Creator with Qt libraries 4.6.0, Open Watcom (Not Mac but OS/2), Python with wxWindows 2.8 and Qt graphical interfaces.

Personally, I consider Qt libraries as the best libraries ever created. I wanted to buy them but was too expensive for me. Fortunately, Nokia made them available for free. Thank you Nokia!

CNCPro, a PD software

Update Dec 25, 2009: If you want to make modifications at source level, then you need Borland C++ 3.1, an old DOS compiler.

Finally, I found it! Is a CNC software from Yeager Automation under DOS system. Is written in C language (exactly, Borland C) and can drive a 4 axis router. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, my strongest hobby :p . What is so special with it? Well, is not the best CNC software under DOS operating system (in my opinion, TurboCNC is the one) but Yeager put it in Public Domain with sources.

Yep, now you can study it and modify it as you like, Where can be found? Here. Is a Yahoo group. Of course, is easy to put it on my site but I respect that comunity. So, if you want it, you must have a Yahoo email acount to join. There you will find also tweaked variants from members in File section.

If you want more details about this CNC thing, here you can find a very nice and detailed walk-through.

CNCPro main screen under Dosbox DOS Emulator. Of course, I can't use it under an emulator and on a MAC computer without paralel port but I did it to see how it looks. Also, I did a compilation test under the same emulator with Borland C++ 3.1 . Zero compilation errors :p .

Update:

Borland C++ 3.1 and a successful compilation of CNCPro. Turbo Vision is the best text user interface in the world. I tested the generated code and is perfectly valid, works well on a PC.

QWriter IDE for FreeJALduino board

I working at adapting QWriter Programmer Editor of Gancov Konstantin as an IDE and until now, I have color syntax for .jal files and the IDE can be compiled from the same sources under Windows, Linux and Mac. I'm not proficient in Qt but I hope to do a good job. Of course, sources will be available, as stated in GNU General Public License, so anyone can do modifications.

To do:
- a tab for compiler configurations in "Settings" dialog;
- a tab for programmer configurations in "Settings" dialog;
- a console for reports;
- no code explorer in near future;

XYZ USB CNC Router

I started another FreeJALduino project - "USB-CDC - XYZ CNC Router board": a 3 axis CNC Router on USB. I'm using JALv2 compiler with Jallib libraries and frejalduino.jal, a layer between Arduino language and JAL language. As for USB communications, it use USB Serial library made by Albert Faber for sending/receiving signals to/from PC. I made a testing montage and a testing program.

The final target is a functional shield for FreeJALduino board which permits direct connections of three steppers, a limit switch and three LED's as indicators. A PC host program will parse gcodes and will send strings to the board, something like here:

Is my first trial. If it will fail to work as expected, I will try USB HID approach...will see...

And FreeJALduino MEGA v.3 based on PIC18F4550 is ready as a board for gEDA PCB, my favorite PCB designer.

Features:

- Up to 29 digital I/O where 13 can be used as analog inputs;
- 3mm Green LED on 5v external power;
- 3mm Red LED on A4 - required by Pinguino bootloader;
- 3mm Blue (can be any colour you want) Testing LED on [Digital 13] pin, enabled/disabled via a jumper;
- A connector to fix 100milis problem;
- LM3940 (3.3 volt regulator) on board

Don't worry about the color of the traces, here are only two layers.

The bottom layer is looking much better now. Don't use this image for making your PCB!

FreeJALduino for gEDA PCB

Now, FreeJALduino project have his own location on Google Code. Not much right now on svn but will be.

And, for his debut, I released version 2 as board for gEDA PCB. I hope this time the design will be considered an "art". It have even an optical illusion zone :P. As features:
- LM3940 on board
- Power LED
- Testing LED with jumper on/off
- Two resistors (22R) on USB data traces
- Decoupling capacitor on USB power (close to USB connector)
- Another socket for shields made from protoboards (fixing 100milis problem).

Of course, not tested yet, and the silk is not ready. But I had no patience ;).

My bullet proof security toolbox on Windoze systems

Until now, I had a very good solution for protecting Windows workstations. It was the only one guarantied by me. I'm not talking about professional and expensive tools. Out of question. I'm talking about free tools, accessible to all of us.

On short, after a fresh Windows install and swapping Internet Explorer with Firefox (and NoScript as add-on), next installing Comodo firewall and Avira antivirus. I never had any problems on systems tuned this way by me for friends and for my use.

Few days ago, I received from Avira an announce that I can use their product for free, another 10 months. After that, I must buy the product. This means that I will never install Windows systems for my friends but, if they want Linux I am available.

I know now are hard financial times for anybody and we all must survive but thanks God, we have Linux (and Wine for Windows addicted people).

Oops! Forgot about the anchors! Repaired for the breadboard part. Actually, the breadboard and pcb parts are ok. The schematic needs intervention. Later... As is now the part can be used for breadboarding and PCB-ing single-sided shields. And I intend to use it in tutorials. Download the file again - is at version 2 now. I hope soon to fix also the schematic part.

The component is for 0.3.6 (b3340 2009-08-14) version of Fritzing (scaled down a little because of some stupid hidden objects...).

FreeJALduino test: blink a LED with Pinguino

Yes! It's working! I confess, I was afraid it will not work :-P. It use bootloader v2 and a modified version of Pinguino 6 of Jean-Pierre Mandon. Thank you again Jean-Pierre! I will use Pinguino for a CNC Router (from RepRap project) and more...

On some projects (USB PIC programmer, Windmill controller) I will use also jallib package with the bootloader and PC hosting application from Albert (jallib development team).

Note:
If you plan to program this board with Pinguino, just wait for the next release of Pinguino IDE from Jean-Pierre Mandon which will include support for this board. Otherwise, you can program it with any other pic programing language on the market.

My boards until now were made using transparencies, with a big percentage of failures. I tried with A4 label sheets (removed the labels and printed on support) and I failed at first time by a stupid mistake. Second time worked just fine. I will continue to use this method to see if I can repeat the success...

This is how should look. But here are few issues:

1. - Digital 13 pin and Aref pin on extension sockets are not connected. Solution: I really don't care about them because I don't have other free pins left :-P;
2. - 3.3 pin from extension sockets is unconnected. Solution: this is an important issue because you can't use the existing Arduino shields which require 3.3 volts. I will place a via close to it, allowing you to connect an LM3940 which can be mounted on a little extension board or sticked on the board with glue (for your own shields, you can mount it right there, on shield);
3. - The ICSP male connector is too close to USB-B connector so you can't connect your Pickit2 programmer directly. Solution: I will use a female connector, using two male connectors with wires as a bridge between the board and programmer.
4. - When you connect the board to USB or Pickit2 programmer and jumper is set to internal power select (and no external power connected), your shield don't have power. This is an intended issue. The board don't have protection for USB power and is wise (and required) to extract your shield when you program your board with Pickit2. Always use external power when you program the board (or exchange data) via USB and have the shield connected. On short version, a shield is powered only by an external power source.

Of course, the board can be resized to make room for all components but I don't want to do it. I like it as it is! Remember, no SMD components, easy to build and close to Arduino board shape. Anything too big and different from Arduino board shape will render the board less attractive. Anyway, is good enough for the first version...

Anyone can manufacture it with SMD components for commercial if have the possibilities.

Now I can start building my FreeJALduino USB development board. This board will be supported by Pinguino IDE (Arduino language) provided by Jean-Pierre Mandon which have also a very nice board (right now, the IDE is working only with his board). It even can have Processing support with pinguino library.

Also, it can use the USB bootloader of Albert (which is member of Jallib development team), JALv2 compiler and jallib libraries together.

Of course, you can use any PIC Programming Language on the market but see first if it provide USB CDC support.

I hope it will became a popular board. Anyway, it will be useful for me.

Planned projects for this board: USB ICSP PIC programmer, USB Windmill/Solar controller/logger, USB CNC Router. As shields, of course ;-)

jallib 0.4 (JAL libraries) released

It come with a completely re-factored ADC library (a long awaited one), more supported devices, more examples and one more project (USB development board).

Soon, the development team will come up with their own set of development boards (mini, midi, maxi, all with USB support). Worth to keep an eye on them.

Oshonsoft Basic under Linux SuSE 11.1

I tried Oshonsoft Basic (PIC SImulator IDE, PIC18 Simulator IDE, AVR Simulator IDE) under Linux SuSE 11.1 with WINE 1.1.9 emulator and is working great. That's very good for beginners, and in my case, is a good thing programming AVR's.

Of course, you can register it and use without restrictions. Basic compiler is working and also simulation. Is very possible to be in need to launch the registration at the beginning of every session.

Note:

However, there is a problem. Use his own editor only for loading and compiling program sources. For creating/editing, use KWrite but you must configure it to save files in a compatible mode for DOS / Windows operating systems (you know, CR / LF old problem). Want to see on your own? Try to edit or create a new program with the original editor and you will get weird errors, even if your syntax is correct. Hope it helps for someone...

My universal pic development tools

I have a(almost) complete chain for PIC development, identical under Linux, Windows, Mac OS X (with the help of fink). The IDE is piklab and languages are jalv2 with jallib, sdcc c, picc and picc18. The programmer must be pickit2 (it come also with a nice development board and a very good PIC, 16F690 - you can build a complete windmill controller/logger with it).

Recently I added the FreeJALduino board, a pic usb development board based on PIC18F2550. I'm very delighted about it. I consider it the best development board I ever had (of course, I didn't built it yet FreeJALduino Mega board which is based on PIC18f4550).

Is even smaller than the development board which come with Pickit2 Microchip programmer.

And, because is about PIC's, it involve electronics development tools and an universal solution for Win, Linux and Mac is gEDA suite. Then, Eagle and KiCAD (this one, only for Win and Linux because I failed to compile it under Mac.

For C professional programmers, here is a great solution, working on all three systems, provided by Hi-Tech. The IDE is Hi-Tide based on Eclipse.

Another thing you can do with Blender is to transform an entire 3D scene to bas-relief for CNC wood carving. The code is not included yet in actual version (2.49a) of Blender but a patch is provided so, you can build it yourself.

New (finally) theme for my blog

I have Sasha's permission to use his theme for my projects. So, I ported it to Blogger Classic Template and replaced my old theme. I know now I dont have the navigator (still, you can easily navigate through articles with the help of "Archives" combo box from right sidebar) but when I will have enough time I will port the theme to Blogger Layout (for my use, of course).

The theme is looking good on following (modern) web browsers:
- Internet Explorer 7 (with little error) and Internet Explorer 8 (correct);
- Firefox and all Gecko based browsers;
- Safari;
- Opera;
- Chrome.

The theme is not looking right on:
- Internet Explorer 6 and smaller versions (consider making an upgrade for best web browsing experience.)

The PICAXE08M controller is working nice but I think is something wrong with my battery. Is discharging fast (in minutes) from 14.4V to 13V having only the controller as consumer. Then, discharging is slowed.

The project

This is "Work In Progress"! This project will be disponible in many languages: mikroPascal, mikroBasic, mikroC, Jal v.2, Micro Pascal v.1.2.3, PicBasic. The schematics will be disponible in ExpressPCB, Eagle, KiCAD

I'm planning to make a stepper driver with P12F675 Microchip microcontroller and, because recently I discovered mikroPascal, I decied to start the project. mikroPascal is the most complete IDE from the market and a pascal programming language for microcontrollers development. You can download the program and start using for free, the only limitation is the final size of hex code (2Kb) - but enough for 8 pin controllers. mikroElektronika, the producer of this IDE, has also other IDE's like mikroBasic and mikroC and many microcontroller development boards. The IDE is at 8.0.0.1 version and entire project will be available for download. Why pascal? I know it and I like it. Other reasons are that mikroElektronika has plans of porting it under Linux (work in progress) and because I'm learning also Jal, a good, complete and free solution for Win/Linux.

The stepper

The board will drive a unipolar stepper motor in half steps and, after many days of research on internet, I found good references but for old microcontrollers as 12C508A or controllers with more than 8 pins. Anyway, still a good start. I found programs in assembler and Jal language. A very good reference about stepper motors is a web page of Douglas W. Jones at THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Department of Computer Science. And many other places on the web. All references will be mentioned at the end of this article.

The CNC Software

TurboCNC is the main target as a CAM software and, the schematic and microcontroller software will follow the Dakeng rules.

Current limiter

I strongly recommend the use of this current limiter, instead of expensive power resistors.

Other languages

When the board will be successfully tested, other languages (with hex file as well) will be available for download. Until now, a Jal v.2 program is ready, but not yet available for download. Is amazing how little is the size of hex file generated by Jal, comparing with mikroPascal ...

"Burning" the chip

As a programmer, I have done this circuit and now I have the opportunity to test it.

Tests

On a breadboard, with LED's instead of stepper coils and switches instead of computer pulses. It works!

Tested the program with a mouse microswitch and a capacitor for filtering the sparks.

The final testing board is almost ready (not all connections are made) but I will not transfer the PIC until the test with a pulse generator (be it the PC or BE555). And I want to test other compilers ...

Code size comparison - different compilers

The smallest code is not always the fastest but it matter when is about 8 pin devices, with small memory space.

Final results

Not yet... The logic is ok. I wrote the same program in a few versions of Jal language with different sets of libraries and I am quite happy with the result. I think I will continue in Jal language because have no limitations and have better optimisation (I will provide all the sources at the end - not big deal anyway).

Conclusions

Until now...

- Drawing schematics in ExpressSCH (comparing to Eagle and KiCAD) is a nightmare and the result suffer in quality. However, working with ExpressPCB in designing boards is at hand.

- Programing in mikroPascal can be a pleasure, specially for Borland Pascal 7.0/Delphy programmers. It have the best IDE from the market. And they produce the best development boards for microcontrollers. The free version is good enough for MCU's with up to 2Ko of memory. Too bad it is not well optimised... (mean time, mikroElectronica has a new version of mikroPascal, the professional version, available for free with the same limitations about code size but better optimisations - not tested yet...). Update April 22, 2009: Tried the Pro version and I obtained the smallest code.

- Is a pain to work with Jal at first try... The documentation is poor and Yahoo Jallist discussion group is hard to browse. I will not recomend it for beginners. But is my favourite for now.

- Having a breadboard is helpful when you design/test your program. But I really need a development board (and thanks God, I did it). And I think I will develop one for 12f629, 12f675, 12f683 pic's.

I have the battery

Finally, I have the battery. Is a GB 12-250 (12V/250Ah) solar battery from BSB Power.

Today I measured it and connected the controller made with Gill's PICAXE 08M. The green LED means that controller is powered, red LED means that consumers are disconnected because of a very low battery voltage, and blue LED means that controller is in charging mode. I will go to buy some cables and system will be ready.

Things are starting to move again

This year I wasn't able to work on my windmill (big troubles and changes) but, at the end, with my wife's savings I acquired a 12V/75Watt "Solara" solar panel. For January, I will get my "deep cycle" 12V/250Ah battery and the solar system will be functional.

I must see if I can use the same regulator for both solar panel and windmill... And start the work for 12V regulators for LED lights (those Chinese lamps). I have already a bunch of LM7812 and LM7805. The 60 F&P stator is wired as 5x3x3x3 (Glenn's setup). I don't know yet how to configure the 100 stator, I will wait to see the first results.

Wood stove working at full capacity

After a couple of warm weeks, now the winter is establishing for good. Wood stoves are working at full capacity. The majority of them are built with terracotta. Electric stoves are "out of question" and here are no gas pipes. Tanks God we have forest near village. This is the house of my neighbour (posted without his permission :p )

I found another free, open source CNC software. It works only on Win95/98 and you have sources if you want to make modifications/improvements. At installation moment, when it ask for key, enter 0000 and you are ready to go.

E Z CNC is an old software program which communicates to your motor drives, through your PC parallel port (printer port), only under Windows 95/98. Since it is only capable to work under Windows 95/98, and is no longer supported, it is free for all to download . It may be used to produce step and direction pulses with ramping for up to 3 motors, senses 3 home switches, and the E-stop button for emergency situations. All signals to and from the port are (TTL), which is compatible with almost any driver/translator found today. Also pins to the parallel port can be configured to almost any desired configuration. Switches can be enabled or disabled, switched to negative or positive pulse by the click of a mouse button.

Blender is already used as a visualisation tool for architects (ok, maybe only few of them). And, if you need it for such, then here and here are good places for start with.

But what if you have one of these:

which will be translated by the machine into a nice piece of carved wood

But for CAD/CAM is not enough. Is very possible to make in python a translation script for a CNC Router but for this you need to have a measurement system (still you can use Blender units if you have a deadline). And things are changing. For 2.50 version are already planned some of these requirements.
